Watch Your Councillors Online
Short video profiles of NPDC Councillors can now be viewed on this website.
The clips, which run for about one minute each, feature Councillors talking about themselves and their role on the Council.
“Most of the community don’t attend Council meetings and rarely see or hear those elected to represent them. The video profiles will allow them to do this at their own convenience,” says Manager Communications Nick Maybury.
“We hope people will take a few minutes to watch the profiles and get a better understanding of the people on their Council.”
The clips build on other Council initiatives to engage with the rapidly growing proportion of the community for whom technology is the preferred means of communication.
These initiatives have included the ‘Talk New Plymouth’ web forum created for the last Community Plan, online submissions for all Council consultation processes, touch screen surveys to gather public feedback, and the Council’s pages on social media sites Facebook and Twitter.
“If we want to engage with a wide cross-section of the community it’s important that we use all the available communications channels,” says Mr Maybury.
“Some people like to write letters and make telephone calls but an increasing number prefer to gather information and interact online – it’s important that we cover all the bases and engage with ratepayers in whichever way suits them best.”
Online services currently offered by newplymouthnz.com include payments for rates and water bills, feedback for all ongoing consultations, job applications and searching of cemetery records. “We intend to expand our range of online services soon with more online payment options, for the likes of dog registration renewals, as well as giving people the ability to lodge and track applications for consents,” says Mr Maybury.
