Four 2009-2010 capital works projects deferred by the Thames-Coromandel District Council in November to help cut back next year's projected rate increase will not be reinstated.

A five-four split decision at December's Council meeting rejected a notice of motion to have the Tairua service lane, Tairua youth zone, Whangamata Hall noise control and Matarangi boat ramp improvements projects brought back into this year's programme.

They were dropped in November among a number of other capital works projects that could be deferred in order to limit the flow-on effects of interest and depreciation on next year's rates.

However, Councillors called for a safety report on the Tairua service lane project after being told that there was a health and safety issue being created by large truck and trailer units having to back out of the currently one-way service lane, with a view to reinstating that particular project if necessary.
