EW helping in aftermath of Awakino spill

Environment Waikato is to assist emergency services in dealing with a diesel and whey spill after a truck crash into the Awakino River, near the south-west corner of the regional council’s area, this morning.

Duty manager Rob Dragten said EW had been alerted to the fact that deisel and whey were leaking from the vehicle which was sitting overturned in the river.

“We’re not sure exactly how much material has gone into the river yet.

“But river users, especially those near the coast, need to be aware of the spill that is occurring.”

Mr Dragten said EW would look to provide a further update once staff had arrived at the scene and assessed the situation.
