TAUPO

The Taupo Community Ambassadors have been on the streets of Taupo now for the past two weeks in a summer trial of the new initiative, and have been well received by the public.

Project Coordinator Neil Peterson says that the ambassadors have been busy giving directions and helping people find their way around Taupo. “Questions have ranged from where the nearest loo is, to banks, barbers, the rodeo and golf courses. And a few have asked what to do on a rainy day.”

Some lost property has been dealt with, and a potential motor accident was prevented thanks to some quick thinking by one of the ambassadors when he was able to stop a vehicle from crossing the path of oncoming police cars on their way to another accident.

“We have not had to report any crimes so far, and everyone has been really friendly, which makes the job very enjoyable,” says Mr Peterson.

So far there are four ambassadors, all of whom have been extremely busy. The Council require more volunteers to do this important role. “More volunteers would enable us to give better coverage, and increase the times that we have people on the beat,” says My Peterson. “At the moment they are around town for up to 3-4 hours a day, but we’d like to see this cut to just a couple.”

Any person that has good local knowledge, is civic-minded and has a few hours to spare each week can contact Ambassadors Coordinator Neil Peterson on 376 0804, or email npeterson@taupo.govt.nz
