Colourful makeover for Hamiltons traffic signal boxes

The city's dull traffic signal boxes are set to get a colourful makeover, with the launch of a new community art initiative – Adopt-a-Box on 23 January.

Adopt-a-Box lets Hamiltonians make their mark on Hamilton by painting original artwork on traffic signal boxes at every intersection in the city.

Hamilton City Council graffiti co-ordinator Casey Molloy expects the project to be a hit with everyday Hamiltonians and one which delivers more than one benefit.

"Anyone can apply to paint a traffic signal box. Families, clubs, friends, professional or first time artists, school groups, kids or elders can Adopt-a-Box. Budding Adopt-a-Box artists only have to be two things: they must live in Hamilton and they must have their design approved by Hamilton City Council. By getting involved you're not only discouraging vandalism but you're also creating something eye-catching and special in your neighbourhood", he says.

At the launch, local DJ Mark Bunting will pit himself against top mural artists, including the Underwater Collective, in a paint-off judged by Hamilton Mayor Bob Simcock.

DJ Mark Bunting shares the enthusiasm saying he's amped to go.

"I'm really excited about this, because it's a way I can put my visible 'mark' on the city I love. Believe me every time I have friends and rellies visiting, this will be on the tourist route. Normally you have to be either rich or elected to make your mark in this way. This makes it exciting, attainable and fun. What a cool thing for our city. How many more people are now going to be able to say -see that? I did that", he says.

The Adopt-a-Box launch will be held this Saturday 23 January from 10-1 on the corner of Grey and Clyde Streets in Hamilton East. It will be a great opportunity for families to get started and unleash their inner artists. As well as the 'paint-off' there will be an artists' table full of design templates and art supplies free to use on the day as well as lots of family fun and refreshments.
