We asked the Council's 'walkways specialist', David Halliday, for his picks for the summer. Here's what he came up with.

Most Varied

The Northern walkway runs along Te Ahumairangi (Tinakori Hill) into Trelissick Park in the Ngaio Gorge and up through the hills of Khandallah Park, including Mt Kau Kau, and then down into Johnsonville. Allow a full day. Public transport is available at both ends.

Most Challenging

The picturesque track from the Brooklyn wind turbine to Red Rocks is testing because it runs along the exposed ridge tops of Te Kopahou Reserve above the South Coast. There are fantastic views of the Wellington region and the South Island. Allow a full day.

Most Demanding

The City to Sea walkway has a lot of steps running up and down the hills on this full-day walk. It starts in Bolton Street Memorial Park, follows the western side of the Town Belt and ends at Shorland Park in Island Bay.

Least Known

The Stellin track. This starts at Stellin Memorial Park in Northland and runs at a gentle contour through native bush and into the pine forests of Te Ahumairangi (Tinakori Hill). It then drops down the hill to St Mary Street, across the road from the Botanic Garden. It's a short walk - it allows you to join onto other walkways in the area.
