There's No Place Like Home
A film set in Wellington, Eagle vs Shark, is the first in a series of free screenings at the Botanic Garden Dell every week throughout February.
Part of the Council's NZCT Summer City festival, and hosted by Cuba St Carnival, the series includes many film-lovers' favourites.
Carnival Artistic Director Chris Morley-Hall says there'll be plenty of opportunity to dress-up as a movie character.
"Consider the dress-up party that takes place in Eagle vs Shark, the '80s garb of Dirty Dancing, and the wealth of outfits from The Wizard of Oz. Don't forget the red shoes for that one," says Chris.
"We're finishing the series with a blast of soul and '70s nostalgia. Soul Power documents the three-day concert that took place in the lead-up to the Ali vs Foreman fight in Zaire in 1974. Big names such as BB King and James Brown feature in the film - expect an amazing atmosphere at the Dell that night."
The films take place every Thursday throughout February. All films start at around 8.30pm, as dusk falls. Here's the order: Eagle vs Shark (M), this Thursday; Dirty Dancing (PG), 11 February; The Wizard of Oz (PG), 18 February; and Soul Power (PG), 25 February.
"And if you're not so good at preparing a picnic, you'll be glad to know we've got the Hawthorn Lounge on board," says Chris. "They'll put on a fully licensed bar and barbeque, so you can wine and dine beneath the stars."
The best way to get there is through the Glenmore Street entrance to the Botanic Garden. The Dell is tucked away behind the Begonia House in the Rose Garden. Just like during the ASB Gardens Magic series, it's hard to get parking during this time in the area, so it's recommended that people walk or get a bus if they can. The number 3 bus goes straight to the Glenmore Street entrance.
For more details about the films, go to the Summer City section of this website or pick up a Summer City brochure from stands around town. Listings will also be placed in the Council's Our Wellington page in The Dominion Post every Tuesday.
