WELLINGTON CITY

If you're a keen walker, here's a fresh challenge: a new walking route, running from the sea to Karori Sanctuary - Zealandia.

This walk has waymarkers pointing out the route.

The walk will take between two to three hours, so take a sun hat and a drink.

It runs through one of the oldest parts of Karori Cemetery, including the 'SS Penguin walk', where the 72 people who lost their lives in the shipwreck of HMS Penguin on 12 February 1909 are buried.

The route:

  • Start at Trelissick Park at the bottom of Kaiwharawhara Road.
  • Follow the route through Trelissick Park (this is well signposted) and emerge at Waikowhai Street in Ngaio.
  • Take the footpath along Churchill Drive to Otari-Willton's Bush Native Botanic Garden. Head south through the bush, past the Troupe picnic lawn and onto the Kaiwharawhara Track that leads into the Karori Cemetery.
  • Head south through the cemetery and out onto Seaforth Terrace and then down to the Karori Garden Centre.
  • Walk along Appleton Park to the Karori Sanctuary - Zealandia.
