Motorists are being warned to take special care while traveling on Far North roads over the next 24 hours.

Far North District Council Roading & Drainage Manager Greg Ingham said today the heavy rain overnight and through this morning could compound the damage to road surfaces caused by the two extreme weather events in March and July.

“With two major storms within such a short timeframe we have been struggling to complete repairs and get the roading network back up to an appropriate standard. While today’s rainfall has not caused any major problems so far, it will be impacting on pavement and slip areas already weakened by the two earlier events,” he said.

So far there the only reports received had been of minor surface flooding in areas susceptible to inundation during normal winter heavy rain periods. However some schools had opted to close early as a precaution.

“We are asking motorists to take particular care will the heavy rain persists,” he said.

The council would continue to closely monitoring the situation.
