Jesse Ryder will undergo surgery next week to reinforce his abdominal wall. He will commence rehabilitation shortly after surgery.

BLACKCAPS selectors spokesman, Mark Greatbatch, said; ”He is disappointed but realises that surgery is the best step forward at this time.

“He will have to undergo extensive fitness testing then prove himself fully fit in domestic first class cricket. His return to the BLACKCAPS is entirely dependent on him being fit and injury free,” said Greatbatch.

BLACKCAPS team physiotherapist, Kate Stalker, said that the injury, which has kept Ryder on the sideline since October, has not responded to rehabilitation as quickly as expected.

“Jesse was assessed by a team of NZC medical staff and external consultants in New Zealand, England and South Africa. He showed a tear of the rectus abdominis muscle. It is a very complex injury and, unfortunately, has not responded as well as we would have hoped.

“On Wednesday this week he was assessed again by a team of consultants in Auckland who recommended the abdominal procedure. Next week’s surgery will strengthen Jesse’s lower abdominal wall to provide support to the area in general and will allow his rehabilitation to progress.

“Jesse’s rehabilitation will continue almost immediately after surgery.”
