Alex Swney says the Minister’s announcement provides a sound way forward for the Rugby World Cup’s party central, Queens Wharf and the cruise industry.

“More importantly it will give Aucklanders an opportunity to get onto the wharf, get to know it, and share some experiences during the celebrations. We haven’t been allowed on the wharf for yonks, and it would have been wrong to knock everything down before we get there to see it and use it for a while,” says Swney.

“Hopefully the announcements today signal a sensible renovation of at least one of the existing sheds for party central in 2011 and the cruise industry in 2012”, says Swney.

Swney says that the approach also provides the new Auckland Council the opportunity to work in partnership with the Government from November this year, with a view to articulating to Aucklanders what the plans are for the central CBD waterfront. “Before then we’d like to see Auckland City supporting the ARC’s and Government’s initiatives with funding for Queen’s wharf infrastructure and agreed refurbishment on the wharf.”
