Public Comment Sought on Gambling Policy
From Thursday next week (11 March) the public will be able to have their say on gaming machines in New Plymouth District.
Tonight (Tuesday) the Council approved for consultation a recommendation to keep the status quo with its Gambling Policy.
If the recommendation is approved after a public hearing in late April, the policy will continue to allow for up to nine gaming machines per new venue, or up to 18 machines if two licensed venues legally and physically merge.
New Plymouth District has 29 licensed venues and 388 machines.
“We really want people to speak up on this issue and let us know their views,” says Manager Corporate Strategy and Policy Kate Macnaught.
“The money redistributed from gaming machines to community organisations can benefit the community, while the gambling itself can harm the people involved.
“The public’s feedback will help guide the Council on its final decision regarding the Gambling Policy.”
People can make submissions on the proposal from 11 March to 9 April, with feedback forms available through all Council offices and libraries. Submissions can also be made online through this website.
The Gambling Policy is reviewed every three years.
The Council has already consulted with 200 stakeholders ranging from community groups, gaming trusts and venue licence holders to the police and health organisations.
This second round of consultation is open to everyone in the community.
