Christchurch rider Thomas Hubbard has been awarded the BikeNZ U23 scholarship to travel to the USA and join the NOW – MS U25 team based in California for March and early April.

The NOW-MS U25 team is supported by US-based Kiwi TV host Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race.

The New Zealand link provides a fantastic opportunity for Hubbard and other up-and coming Kiwi riders to race on the highly competitive US circuit. The BikeNZ scholarship covers travel costs and coaching support.

This is the first year the NOW-MS U25 team has linked with BikeNZ on a scholarship for a younger rider, and BikeNZ are hoping this may develop into more riders being given the opportunity to race in the US over a longer period.

At only 18 years old, Hubbard raced and completed New Zealand’s tough Tour of Southland in 2009, and finished 6th in the 2010 RaboPlus Elite Road Championships in the under 23 grade. Hubbard has also ridden impressively in North America at the Tour de l‘Abitibi with the BikeNZ U19 team.

Hubbard’s race programme with the team will include the Tour de Murrieta , the San Dimas Stage Race, and the Redlands Classic.

Kiwis can follow Thomas’ progress with the team through their web site http://www.teamvrc.com/index.php.
