Top students start at Victoria
Victoria has proved to be the university of choice for New Zealand’s best and brightest as a high proportion of top secondary school scholars begin their studies at the University.
Recently the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) announced the highest performers in the 2009 New Zealand Scholarship examinations.
Two winners of Premier Awards, which were awarded to the eight top students, are studying at Victoria this year.
Moreover, eight of the 33 recipients of Top Subject Awards have also chosen to study at Victoria, 25 percent of the total. The two Premier Award winners now at Victoria were also winners of Top Subject Awards.
In recent years, Victoria has encouraged secondary school students to study at Victoria through a range of initiatives.
The University awards School Leaver Excellence scholarships to high-achieving school students and runs free workshops to prepare students for the New Zealand Scholarship examinations. These draw on the strengths of Victoria staff and expose potential students to the excellent teaching throughout the University.
The top students now at Victoria are studying a broad range of disciplines and come from either Wellington or Auckland, reflecting the success of the University’s Auckland-based student recruitment team.
