An Environment Waikato field day designed to help livestock farmers reduce the environmental impact of animals during winter is being held near Te Kuiti on Friday 9 April.

The stock wintering field day will be held at the property of Paetui Holdings Ltd, 1467 Rangitoto Rd, Rangitoto, from 10.30am-2.30pm.

All farmers - including dairy, dry stock, dairy support, dairy grazing and cropping farmers - are invited, and this will also be a useful field day for rural professionals.

Speakers from AgResearch will be presenting recent findings on stock wintering.

“This is an opportunity to share and learn about a lot of issues associated with stock wintering,” said EW sustainable agriculture coordinator Bala Tikkisetty, who will facilitate the field day.

“The types of stock wintering practices used are important when it comes to maintaining water and soil quality in our region. This field day will be a good way for farmers to learn how to protect both their farming operations and the environment.”

Topics to be covered by speakers include more efficient nitrogen use from wintering systems, standing-off facilities, urine capture from stand-off areas and council regulations relevant to effluent.

People wanting to attend should RSVP to Bala Tikkisetty bala.tikkisetty@ew.govt.nz or
Marilyn Bird marilyn.bird@ew.govt.nz at EW or contact 0800 800 401.
