People who took video footage or photos of the Chilean tsunami surge on the Waikato region’s east coast on Sunday 28 February are being asked to share the images with the Waikato Civil Defence Emergency Management Group.

It was apparent that significant tidal action and surge was observed in the Whitianga and Tairua Harbours and in some other harbours around the Coromandel Peninsula.

Group controller Scott Fowlds said such footage or photos would be very useful for scientific, training and educational purposes.

“The images would also help further our understanding of the way tsunami waves behave as they hit the coast, particularly on the more populated Coromandel coast,” said Mr Fowlds.

People willing to share footage or photos are asked to contact the Group’s Adam Munro on 0800 800 401 or email adam.munro@ew.govt.nz.
