Swimming World Champs Day 1 Heats
Eight New Zealanders swam individual events at the 12th Fina World Swimming Champs in Melbourne today.
First up for New Zealand were Robert Voss and Michael Jack in the men’s 400 Free who placed 34th in 3:57.55 and 42nd in 3:59.94, while Aussie star Grant Hackett just made the cut to swim in tonight’s final with 3.48.72.
New Zealanders Moss Burmester and Corney Swanepoel lined up in the 50 Fly in what Burmester described as a "Loosner" in the build up to his favoured event the 200 fly.
Burmester swam 33rd in 24.55sec, but was surpassed by Swanepoel’s 20th in 24.20 while American Ian Crocker dominated world record holder, Roland Schoeman, of RSA with a 23.30 in an event which saw only .73sec between the top 18 competitors.
In the women’s 400 Free Laure Manaudou swam 1st in a champs record of 4:05.29 while New Zealanders Helen Norfolk and Melissa Ingram came in 17th in 4:11.98 and 22nd in 4.20.04,
Specialist Breaststroker Glenn Snyders swam 19th with 1.01.91 in the 100, well ahead of Dean Kent’s 54th in 1.04.51.
The womens 4x100 Free relay finished 12th.
The championships continue until next Sunday with heats starting at 10am each morning local time (12 noon NZ time) and finals from 7pm (9pm).
