The Dunedin City Council will have almost 1000 housing units for the city’s senior residents when Mayor Peter Chin opens another five new properties to-day.

The complex at 142 Macandrew Rd will comprise three double and two two-bedroom units.

Together with a recently commissioned two-bedroom and a double unit at 1A and 1B Scott St, the new complex brings the total number of DCC owned and managed homes to 996.

In the past eight years, 30 new units, a mix of two-bedroom and double units, have been added in the St Kilda/South Dunedin area. The latest additions cost about $1.4million.

Mayor Chin says: “It’s particularly satisfying for my Council to be able to respond to a clearly expressed demand for such accommodation from the community. I congratulate the DCC’s Property team for their stylish and functional designs, the results of which will, I know, be much sought after”.

The new brick units are designed to be energy efficient, with double-glazing, solar-assisted hot water and full insulation, and were built with accessibility in mind. Each unit has flat access, wet-area showers and facilities such as external power points for motorised mobility scooters.

All sites have been landscaped with paved areas, maintained lawns and low-maintenance gardens and some units have a raised garden bed for easy gardening.

The DCC’s housing units are available to tenants over the age of 55 who meet eligibility criteria. More information and applications forms are available from the DCC’s Customer Services Agencies.
