Hastings District Council’s Administration Building in Lyndon Road East will be closed to the public on Tuesday 6 April while asbestos is removed from the ceiling on part of the ground floor. Signs will advise visitors of the closure.

The work affects only one floor of the building so most council functions and services will continue, but there will be no public access to the building. In-person visits should be rescheduled to another day.

The work entails sealing all doors and air vents, then wrapping the entire space with two layers of thick plastic before the asbestos is removed. Once the work is complete an air sample will be taken to ensure the removal of all traces of asbestos has been successful.

Full public access to the Administration Building should be restored on Wednesday pending a clear air test.

Mike Maguire, the Council’s Group Manager: Corporate and Customer Services, said the asbestos was not dangerous unless it was broken or disturbed, but with building work planned for a dedicated customer service area on the ground floor, the asbestos had to go.

“We expect the asbestos will have been removed by Tuesday, but we need to wait until we have test results confirming the area is safe for staff and the public to use again. We apologise for any inconvenience the closure may cause.”
