Mayor Ogden welcomes drop in crime

Mayor David Ogden has welcomed the release of the latest police figures which show recorded crime in Hutt City fell 3.3% in 2009.

“Every resident in our city deserves to feel safe in their homes and community. While one crime is too many, it’s pleasing to see 360 fewer crimes committed in Hutt City than in 2008.

“I want to thank our hard working police for their continued commitment to reducing crime and keeping our community safe. I also note their recent success in curbing boy racer activities in the City.

“I also want to acknowledge the community patrols and neighbour support groups who work closely with the police to support their efforts.

“The council is also having a positive effect, adopting a range of anti-crime measures such as targeting graffiti, imposing liquor bans, installing CCTV cameras, employing Walkwise foot patrols, and supporting youth-at-risk programmes.

“I look forward to us continuing to work together to further reduce crime, make our streets safe, and ensure our residents have a good quality of life,” says Mayor Ogden.

Council is currently seeking feedback from residents about how safe they feel in the City by asking them to fill in the perceptions of safety survey at www.huttcity.govt.nz. The results from this survey will assist the council in planning for a safer community. Participants must be Hutt City residents and over 15 years of age. The survey should take 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
