Civil Defence Exercise One Fine Day
Members of the Waitaki District Council Civil Defence team took part in an exercise “One Fine Day”.
The fictitious scenario was an extensive flooding situation with access to Oamaru cut off from TheWaitaki River Mouth in the north to Palmerston in the south.
The flooding created life threateningsituations with landslips at Moeraki and a school bus overturning at Hampden.
The exercise included officers from the police, fire and St Johns ambulance services, Ministry of CivilDefence, Whitestone Contracting and Council staff.
The exercise was evaluated by Regional Emergency Management Advisor John Lovell, whoconsidered the team worked well together.
He commented that the Waitaki District Civil Defence team were well positioned in the case of an actual Civil Defence event.
Emergency Manager Chris Raine commented that, “The exercise was a great learning experience andwhile there are always areas of minor improvement, I have complete confidence in the people here tomanage an actual event.”
