Australian Commonwealth Games Selection Trials Invitational Combined Events 9-10 April 2010 – Griffith University
New Zealand decathlon champion Brent Newdick won the decathlon with another Commonwealth Games selection standard performance of 7853 points. The New Zealand standard is set at 7700 points. Newdick’s performances were: 100m 11.02s (-0.8) 856 points, long jump 7.21m (+2.1) 864, shot put 13.95m 725, high jump 1.97m 776, 400m 49.20s 852, 110m hurdles 15.11s (-1.2) 836, discus throw 43.92m 745, pole vault 4.70m 819, javelin throw 55.24m 666, 1500m 4m 34.65s 714.
Sarah Cowley chasing the Games standard of 5800 points in the women’s heptathlon finished second with a score of 5665. Veronica Torr was third with 5428. Australian Lauren Foote won with 5809.
Cowley’s performances were: 100m hurdles 14.07s (+0.5) 968, high jump 1.83m 1016, shot put 11.76m 645, 200m 25.80s (0.0) 815, long jump 5.85m (+0.2) 804, javelin throw 35.33m 578, 800m 2m 18.87s 839. Torr recorded 14.25s (+0.5) 943, 1.65m 795, 13.12m 735, 25.24s (0.0) 865, 5.62m (+3.4) 735, 38.44m 637, 2m 27.98s 718.

KINGSTON, ONTARIO CANADA
17th World University Cross Country Championships – 11 April 2010
Andrew Davidson finished 18th in the men’s 10km in a time of 31m 21s. Race won by Tetsuya Yoroizaka of Japan in 30m 8s, from Liam Adams of Australia in 30m 9s and Christian Glatting of Germany 30m 11s. Yoroizaka was 76th at the recent world cross country championships in Poland. Lydia O’Donnell did not finish to women’s 5km, only completed three of the four laps. World student games 2009 5000m and 3000m steeplechase champion Sara Moreira of Portugal won in 16m 29s from Great Britain pair of Jess Sparke 16m 41s and Joanne Harvey 16m 48s.

US OUTDOORS ROUNDUP
Rainbow Relay, University of Hawai‘i Te Rina Keenan posted a PR in the shot put with a distance of 13.66m for second to go along with her first place finish in the discus at 49.62m. Willamette Invitational at the Charles Bowles Track Portland University Ruth Croft ran 5th in the 5000m with a time of 18m 11.47s. The Oklahoma Christian Ray Vaughn Classic Tulsa’s Katie Wright came 2nd in the 1500m in 4m 48.77s while at the Tennessee Sea Relays Terefe Ejigu of Eastern Michigan University ran 6th in the 1500m with a time of 3m 51.62s.
The DUAL 2010 - Ohio St. vs Michigan in the 800m Dallas Bowden, Michigan came 3rd in
1m 53.04s, while Brendon Blacklaws ran 6th in the 1500m with a time of 3m 51.60s, and followed that up one hour later with a 4th in the 3000m in 8m 31.27s. Purdue University were at the Georgia Spec Towns National Team Invitational where Alice Feslier-Holmes ran 2m 12.64s for 6th in the 800m and in the men’s 800m Simon Rogers placed 7th in 1m 53.94s. The George Mason Spring Invitational Laura Sinclair ran 2m 16.27s in the 800m.
The UCLA Distance Carnival Mandy Russ came 11th in the 1500m with a time of 4m 41.82s. The University of Tulsa track team were at the John McDonnell Invitational on Saturday in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In the 1500m, second was Paula Whiting 4m 23.86s, 4th Melanie Cleland 4m 26.71s and 5th Katie Wright 4m 26.83s. UMBC track team competed at the Mason Spring Invitational in Fairfax, Virginia, where Michael Christmas finished eighth in the men’s 800m run in a time of 1m 52.97s. At the Joe Hilton meet Stony Brooks Lucy Van Dalen came second in the 1500m in 4m 17.95s and at the Sea Ray Relays Lauren Fayen placed fifth in the 800m with a time of 2m 10.21s.

AUCKLAND
Scott Winton won the O’Hagan’s 5km road race around the Viaduct Harbour last Tuesday 6th April in 15m 39s. Brendon Kato was second in 15m 41s with Gavin Stevens third in 16m 27s. Melissa Norris won the women’s in 18m 5s, from Moira Davie 18m 39s and Rachel Bowie 19m 12s.
Racewalking Auckland 20km track walking championship
Mike Parker covered 50 laps of Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday to win in 1h 43m 20s, nearly 10 minutes ahead of David Sim. Brooke Cowsill won the women’s title in 1h 45m 34s. Alana Barber was second in 2h 6m 43s.
Whenuapai Half Marathon
Grant Schofield won in 1h 15m 56s from Roman Kruszewski 1h 17m 33s on Sunday. Melissa Norris won the women in 1h 24m 12s, 36 seconds ahead of Tara La Grange. Rodney Thorne was the first of the walkers in 2h 17m 34s.

OHOPE
Half Marathon – 4 April 2010
Nick Pannett won in 1h 12m 58s, nearly two minutes ahead of Adrian Lysaght. Helen Rountree was the first woman in 1h 20m 22s, three minutes faster than Hannah Barker.

ROTORUA
Xterra Multi-event – 10 April 2010
Scott Thorne of Hamilton after finishing third in 2008 and second last year came through to win the 1km swim, 29km mountain bike and 11km run in 2h 13m 31s. Mark Leishman of Rotorua was second in 2h 14m 30s with Auckland’s Michael Poole third in 2h 18m 5s.
Thorne’s partner and the defending champion Nic Leary won the women’s race in 2h 34m 44s from Monique Avery 2h 36m 26s and Rebecca Rae 2h 39m 9s.
In the individual events, Harry Coates won the 21km run in 1h 19m 19s, 38 seconds ahead of Gavin Stevens. Kate Taylor won the women’s 21km in 1h 35m. The 11km run winners were Phil Murray in 41m 58s and Rachael Kingstone 48m 46s.

LEVIN
Great Forest Event – 10 April 2010
Rowan Hooper won the half marathon in 1h 9m 24s, nearly five minutes ahead of Dave Parsons. Janet Crawford won the women’s half in 1h 32m 5s. Billy MacDougall won the marathon run in 2h 54m 18s, 13 seconds ahead of Andy Bennett. Suzi Richards won the women’s marathon finishing third overall in 3h 8m 48s.
Maria Bentley won the 10km event in 36m 46s. Women headed in the men in all four walking events, Lee McCraken winning the marathon walk in 4h 50m 33s, Tina Rowe the half in 2h 19m 33s, Danielle Welby the 10km in 46m 16s and Caitlin Bedlington the 5km in 23m 48s.

UPPER HUTT
Moonshine Half Marathon
Daniel Nixon won in 1h 23m 21s. Rhys Davies won the walk in 2h 53m 52s. In the 10km Kevin Thompson won in 36m 57s and Daniel Charlton won the walk in 1h 10m 21s.

WELLINGTON
National 1500m champion Hamish Carson won the Wellington Brooks Waterfront 5km road race last Tuesday 6th April in 14m 51s over a minute ahead of Grant McLean (15m 56s). Nyla Carroll was the first woman in 17m 28s, with Vickie Humphries second in 18m 0s.

WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – TEAM COACH APPOINTMENTS
Maria Hassan, Didier Poppe and David Long have been selected as team coaches for the 2010 World Junior Championships New Zealand team. They will join the already appointed team leader Terry Lomax and operations manager Karen Forbes-Henry. A 23 strong team was announced last Wednesday to compete at the Championships in Moncton Canada 19-25 July 2010.

SECOND GALLIPOLI PEACE RUN
The second Gallipoli Peace Run will be held on 23 April in the Eceabat district of the Gallipoli peninsula. The organisers would welcome any New Zealanders, who are to travelling to the area for the traditional Dawn Service, to take part in the run. Their goal is to host more than 10,000 runners in 2015, marking the centennial of the Gallipoli Campaign.
