A contract for $1,126,929 has been let for the long-awaited redevelopment of the Mangonui waterfront.

The project is expected to revitalize the Mangonui waterfront with the potential to substantially enhance marine-related recreational activities in the area, significantly improve parking in the township, and create an improved pedestrian environment in keeping with the historic nature of the waterfront.

Construction will start almost immediately with the project expected to be substantially completed before the Christmas holiday period. To meet Resource Consent conditions, work will cease over the holiday break and the final stages of construction will be completed early in the New Year.

The contract for the project has been let to HEB Contracting Ltd and involves reclamation work, construction of 170 metres of new boardwalk, the development of 72 angled car parks, a new dinghy ramp and open green areas for passive recreation.

Far North Mayor Yvonne Sharp said today this project had been on the community’s agenda for many years.

“”I’m delighted the project has reached the stage which ensures its completion in the very near future. I have supported the community vision for from day one, and like them have at times despaired we would ever get to this point. We have, so let’s all celebrate,” she said.

Northern Ward councillor Ian Bamber said the project since its conception had been frustrated by funding and resource consent issues which inhibited progress. However it was now underway and when completed would open up some real opportunities for the local community.

“This is going to help stimulate the local economy and grow Mangonui’s traditional associations with recreational maritime activities and the visitor industry generally,” he said.
