Just One Week Left to Comment on Liquor Ban
There's just one week left to have a say about a plan to stop people drinking and carrying liquor in public places, 24 hours a day, seven days a week across the whole city.
The consultation closes on Wednesday 5 May. People can have their say online, by email or by posting a submission to the Council.
Public Input - Liquor Control Bylaw
There is already a 24-hour liquor control ban covering the central business district, Oriental Bay, Mount Victoria lookout, Aro Valley and Central Park.
But residents in suburbs outside these areas have told the Council that people drinking in public in their areas are creating problems - so we have decided to ask the public what it thinks of extending the bylaw to cover the entire city.
Mayor Kerry Prendergast said Councillors were keen to hear what people thought of the plan to extend the bylaw.
"We need feedback from the public to help us make a final decision," she said.
"There's no doubt that the current bylaw has proved to be a valuable tool for police. It gives them a measure of control because they can ask people who are drinking to dispose of their liquor, or give them a warning."
