A package of small improvements to five road intersections will begin by the end of next month (May).

The intersections – three in New Plymouth and one each in Inglewood and Bell Block – will be modified to emphasise to drivers that conflicting traffic is ahead.

“We’re looking at small improvements, such as placing throat islands at give ways, to raise drivers’ awareness that this is an intersection and they need to be watching for other traffic,” says Manager Roading Assets Max Aves.

“They’re another visual cue to drivers to not be on auto-pilot as they come to the intersection.”

The number of crashes at these intersections is not large, but they are usually caused by inattention – which should be mitigated by these improvements.

The five intersections are New Plymouth’s Brois/Govett, Carrington/Huatoki (near the Hori Street intersection) and Clawton/Sanders; Inglewood’s Standish/Carrington; and Bell Block’s Connett East/De Havilland.

The improvements will be finished by the end of June.

Meanwhile, concept designs are under way for a roundabout at New Plymouth’s Tukapa/Omata intersection and for a right-turn bay at the Henwood/Manutahi intersection. Detailed designs for the Tukapa/Waimea roundabout have been finalised, and this project will go out to tender by the end of May.

Vehicle speed issues on the section of Vivian Street between Morley Street and Cutfield Road have previously been investigated, with residents asked their views on the installation of speed humps. “The majority of the Vivian Street residents did not want an additional speed hump on that street, which is where we left it,” says Mr Aves.
