WELLINGTON CITY

Work starts soon to establish a faster, more direct bus route through what is now Manners Mall and a new shared space in lower Cuba Street.

The project will improve the city's public transport network and pedestrian links. Road safety work associated with the project begins next week at the intersection of Courtenay Place and Taranaki Street.

We're extending the kerbs near Mr Bun Cafe, Molly Malones, Bungy Extreme and Courtenay Place Park to provide more waiting space to cross the road, and also removing the central islands. This is the city's most hazardous intersection and the changes will make it safer.

We'll also be realigning the footpath at the end of Te Aro Park as part of the creation of the new bus route.

Work in Manners Mall itself is expected to begin in June and take several months. It will be done in stages - you'll still be able to walk through and access the shops and food outlets and our contractor, Downer, will do everything possible to minimise disruption.

The improvements planned to give pedestrians priority in lower Cuba Street will happen next year once the new route is operational.
