Slow Down in Aro Street
Starting today, motorists will have to slow down to 30km/h through the Aro Street shopping centre.
The new speed limit applies to all vehicles at all times and starts 20 metres west of Aro Street's intersection with Epuni Street to 40 metres east of its intersection with Boston Terrace.
The new speed limit is part of our plan to reduce speed limits through most of the city's shopping centres over the next four years.
In January, the speed limit was dropped to 30km/h along a section of Tinakori Road.
In Wellington city, around 100 pedestrians are injured each year and 80 percent of those accidents occur where there is heavy pedestrian activity, such as shopping centres. The lower limit will reduce the severity of crashes.
The Council's Senior Traffic Engineer, Stuart Bullen, says the 30km/h limit will create a safer and more pleasant environment in Aro Street for children walking to school and people using cafes. "Public consultation on the speed-limit change was carried out last year with overwhelming support from the community."
Next up - Island Bay and Kilbirnie centres. If these proposals are favoured by the community, the new 30km/h speed limits are scheduled to go ahead in July.
