Winter road conditions apply
Ice has come early to roads in the Wakatipu Basin, Queenstown Lakes District Council network operations engineers Ian Marshall said.
“As of today winter driving conditions could apply. Particularly on clear frosty mornings like we experienced this morning,” Mr Marshall said.
Light rain overnight and a frosty morning saw winter driving conditions in several spots, particularly on the Arrowtown back road (Malaghan’s Road) and Glenorchy Road.
“People may be taken by surprise but care does need to be taken,’ he said.
Grit trucks were deployed this morning for the first time this year.
“We are all set for the winter regime but it’s important that people are now aware it is time to drive to the conditions,” Mr Marshall said.
Cars should be checked for anti-freeze, chains should be dusted off and placed in the boot and cars should double their following distances.
“Leave a few minutes sooner and driver with more caution,” Mr Marshall said.
A timely winter meeting with contractors, police and schools to revise and reinforce the action plan in the event of heavy snow would be held this week.
- Other good tips to remember were:
- Accelerate smoothly and brake gently.
- 4WD vehicles are no safer than other vehicles, especially downhill.
- Always free your entire windscreen of snow and ice (you can receive an instant fine).
- Check the road conditions before you leave.
- Dress for the conditions.
- Carry chains, know how to fit them and check they fit.
- Shaded areas may be icy all day.
- Ice or a thaw freeze can occur at any time of the day.
- Bridges require extra care.
- Never overtake a grit truck when it is applying grit.
Local road conditions updates would be available on local radio stations.
