NORTH SHORE CITY

CrossFit Auckland, located at 402 Albany Highway, Albany is the proud winner of the CrossFit Games Australasian Affiliate Cup!

The team of six athletes includes 16 year-old Kristin School student Alex McRobie, Alex Porter – team captain and head Coach of CrossFit Auckland, and members Debbie Downing (48 of Coatesville), Bernie Murch (40 of Greenhithe), Jason Yianakis (29 of Birkenhead) and Julie Caradec is the newest member of the team.

Returning from the past weekend’s CrossFit Games Regional competition in Sydney, Australia, the CrossFit Auckland Team, now dubbed “the fittest gym in Australasia”, is ecstatic at their 1st place finish which qualifies them to represent New Zealand at the CrossFit Games in July 16-18, 2010 in Carson City, Los Angeles CA.

The two days of intense competition was a mash-up of events, pitting the very fittest and mentally toughest athletes from Australia and New Zealand, through five workouts ranging from a 2.7km foot race around the Royal Randwick Racecourse carrying a 30kg sandbag, to Cleaning & Jerking a heavy barbell for a total of 5000kg lifted overhead against the clock.

CrossFit as a sport is still relatively new to Australasia, February this year being the first time a sectional qualifier was held in New Zealand ranking athletes from Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand for the 2010 Sydney regional games. The CrossFit Games however has grown into a massive event internationally, and this year’s competition to be held at the Home Depot Centre in Los Angeles will be the 4th major CrossFit Games.

Team CrossFit Auckland were first time competitors in the Australasian Affiliate Cup event and have only a week ago celebrated the 1st anniversary of their club’s opening.

The team being equally represented by males and females of mixed ages also celebrated their youngest team member Alex McRobie’s 16th birthday the day after the event; a great birthday present for Alex, knowing that he and the CrossFit Auckland Team will represent New Zealand and Australasia at the CrossFit Games Worlds in Los Angeles, USA this July.

How does our team prepare for such an event?

What are the workouts? Each year they change, and the specifics are not announced until a couple days before the event. This means that all year long, the athletes are training for a competition whose format is almost completely a mystery.

The CrossFit methodology is one of constant variance, with a seemingly random prescription of exercises. To train for CrossFit events requires mastery and regular practice at a very broad range of activities, which include Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, strongman style outdoor training, rowing and running thrown together in some unlikely combinations.

CrossFit Auckland’s athletes train most days of the week, sometimes twice a day in preparation.
