Check out the footage of Melbourne Vixens player Renae Hallinan scoring the goal of the year while warming up prior to the Round 8 Vixens v West Coast Fever match earlier this week.

In true Melbourne style, the Vixens often kick around an AFL football to warm up before training and matches, and on Monday night, Hallinan responded to MC Peter Lazer’s challenge to kick as close as possible to the ring. After several attempts, she potted the football through the ring with a logistically ambitious diameter of just 38cm.

“I’ve always fancied myself as a goaler, I keep telling (coach) Julie Hoornweg to throw me in Goal Attack, so hopefully now I’ve convinced her that I have the accuracy to back it up!” Hallinan said.

“The most satisfying reaction I got was definitely from my dad. After years of kick to kick in the backyard, he’s always teased me about kicking like a girl, so I was pretty keen for him to see the footage.

“I asked him if he still thought I kicked like a girl and he had to admit that the kick was ‘sensational’ in his words.”

The Vixens will take on the Adelaide Thunderbirds this Sunday in the first Grand Final rematch since the Vixens’ 2009 win.

Hallinan will not be donning the GA bib.
