HAWKE'S BAY

New Zealand Leadership Week 2010
25th June – 2nd July

"Whatever the area, fulfilling one's potential requires worthwhile goals, a ruthlessness in setting standards and the courage to avoid the soft options that constantly present themselves." - Sir Peter Blake

Leadership Week was established in memory of one of New Zealand’s greatest leaders Sir Peter Blake to highlight the value that great leadership provides for New Zealand.

The nationwide series of events showcases the work being done to develop our nation’s leadership capability and raises money for the Sir Peter Blake Trust, set up to help New Zealanders make a positive difference for the planet through encouraging environmental awareness and leadership development.

Hastings District Council is working with local supporters to celebrate great local leadership in Hawke’s Bay by putting together a range of seminars and events across the week of June 25 – July 2.

Local schools are also taking part, and more organisations, businesses and schools around the district are invited to join in and develop their own range of activities during Leadership Week.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says Leadership Week aims to inspire, develop and celebrate great Kiwi leadership – something we have in abundance in Hawke’s Bay.

“Hawke’s Bay is not only a great place to do business, but produces some amazing leaders. Leadership Week is the perfect opportunity to show what talent we have right here in our community leadership, women leaders, local business leaders, and youth - the future leaders of our nation,” Mayor Yule says.

Leadership Week kicks off nationally with the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards, at Government House on June 25, and culminates with a national Red Socks Day, on July 2, when New Zealanders are encouraged to ‘wear the socks of a leader’ in memory of a great Kiwi leader and his legacy of leadership in action.

Events already planned for Leadership Week Hawke’s Bay include:

· June 25: Year 12 Leadership Conference – Lindisfarne College are working with Hastings Youth Council to spend a day exploring the concept of leadership, including a “great debate” between Youth Council and Hastings District Council.

· June 29: Successful Community Leadership Forum – Top tips from local leaders from non-government organisations.

· June 30: Mayoral Leadership Summit featuring keynote speaker Sir Stephen Tindall.

· July 1: Women In Business Breakfast featuring Hawke’s Bay’s own Veuve Cliquot Business Woman Award Winner Cathy Quinn and finalist Jenny Yule.

· July 2: Red Socks Day – wear the socks of a leader and get one hour’s free leadership training from Dale Carnegie Training followed by a Friday night “after-work networking” opportunity.
