The Queenstown Lakes District Council would like feedback on a proposal to make some minor changes to parking on Church Street and a change to Searle Street access, QLDC project manager Lane Vermaas said.

  • Both the street and the lane were currently undergoing an upgrade to enhance and improve the streetscape.
  • “This includes resurfacing of the road and much needed improvements to the footpaths,” he said.
  • Proposed changes were:
  • The council will need to make some minor changes to Church Street parking to fit with the improved streetscape.

The mainly P30 parking in place now from Monday to Friday between 8am to 6pm will be unchanged, as will the two loading zones.

The improvements necessitate a small reduction in spaces (from 56 parks to 52) and a reduction in mobility parks from 4 to 2.

With the proposed reduction in mobility spaces in Church Street, an additional mobility park is proposed on Earl Street near the Marine Parade intersection. As there are presently no mobility parks in this street, the new mobility park will improve the distribution of mobility parks within the town centre.

The upgrade of Searle Lane has presented an opportunity to address significant safety issues for pedestrians. The council is proposing to limit the one way access to goods vehicles only, from 5am to 12 noon. This will enable the lane to be used for alfresco dining and greatly enhance the amenity for pedestrians.

Feedback will close on Friday 25 June, 2010, with the feedback to be reported to Council in July.
