With three days to go it's all on

Day 2 at the Audi MedCup had more reward for Emirates Team New Zealand – fourth and third finishes that put the team within striking distance of the top.

Only seven points separate the top of the leader board Quantum and Matador (each on 21 points) and Emirates Team New Zealand (28 points).

As skipper Dean Barker says: “It’s all on. The points are very tight.”

With six races still to be sailed, the regatta is wide open. The coastal race tomorrow, which scores 1.5 points, could be the turning point.

Skipper Dean Barker said the team’s focus for race day two was to come off the water in a better position than the previous day.

“We achieved that with a fourth and a third in conditions even more difficult than yesterday.  Every boat had its moments today in the light and shifty breeze. There were massive gains and losses, depending on where you were on the course.

“The results might not sound so great even but it was the second best performance of today, only Origin with a first and a third, did better. We started the day 11 points from the top and finished only seven.

“With three days still to go we are still very much in contention in this regatta.”

Emirates Team New Zealand’s performance today also improved its lead for the season championship. Down to 12 points after an indifferent day yesterday, it is now at 17.
