The launch of a new cycle path between Tuckers Road and Langdon Road could result in some lucky cyclists.

Bike along this stretch of the new cycle path between 8 am and 9 am on 30 June and you could get a free bike light.

The new cycle route is just one of many that are being created throughout Christchurch to make cycling an easy choice for commuters and those out to explore the city and get some exercise.

The Northcote Road to Tuckers Road ‘off road’ cycle path extension is now fully operational and has a new 500 metre lighted pathway and a signalised crossing to link to the existing path from North Railway to the City.

The new route includes a signalised crossing for cyclists and pedestrians at the rail crossing.

There are plans to extend the route further to Main North Road near Styx Bridge, and further extensions to Northwood, so that by 2016 there is a link all the way to the Northwood Centre.

Leaving from central Christchurch, the North Railway-City route goes via Hagley Park through popular Fendalton, Papanui and Northcote. Priority is given to cyclists along the way as sensors in the tarmac activate traffic signals, allowing riders to maintain their momentum.

“It's another great asset for a city passionate about cycling!” says Terry Howes, Asset and Planning Unit Manager.
