North Harbour Cross Country, Long Bay Regional Park – 26 June 2010.

Alex Parlane continued his dream run this cross country season posting another win at the annual North Harbour meeting at the Long Bay Regional Park on Saturday.

Competing in the 4km combined race with the juniors Parlane covered the two laps in 12m 47s, to beat junior Cameron Graves by 11 seconds.

Last year Parlane was third in the junior race over the same distance in 12m 6s.

Parlane said he enjoyed the fast start provided by the junior runners in the field.

“The start was a bit quick because the men 16 and 19 went out pretty hard and it took me a while to get past them. But that was good because I wanted a fast race,” he said.

“Cameron Graves gave me a good push for about three quarters of the race and I then held him off until the end,” said Parlane.

His next challenge will be the North Island championships in Taupo in two weeks time.

Stephen Lett was the second senior in 13m 5s with Scott Winton making his first appearance this winter taking third in 13m 9s.

Lydia O’Donnell who last competed at the world university cross country championships in Ontario Canada in mid April won the women’s 4km.

O’Donnell had the strength over the second half to pull clear of Erin Montgomery to win by four seconds in 14m.

“I didn’t really expect much as I hadn’t raced for a long time, I just wanted to have fun,” said O’Donnell.

This time last year Montgomery was racing the tracks of Europe, but an injury prevented her from heading to the northern hemisphere this winter.

“That’s my first cross country race in a couple of years and I am really happy to be back. I’ve recovered from the injury and had a good few months of solid training,” said Montgomery.

Both O’Donnell and Montgomery are now looking forward to the North Island championships.

Robbie Johnston in the 40-44 age group easily won the masters 4km race in 13m 51s. Rachel Penney was the fastest in the masters women recording 14m 52s.
