This Friday, students at Greytown School will celebrate the success of an environmental project that involved them project-managing major environmental restoration works.

North Creek, which runs along their school field, was once a stream with a diversity of plant and animal life. But by 1980s it had been opened up and lined with concrete so that it essentially acted as a drain. The plant and animal life diminished and the stream was continually clogged up with sediment.

Last year, students decided to embark on a project to “Restore the mauri” of the stream. Taking the lead at every turn, they:

• Presented their project plan to the Board of Trustees and South Wairarapa District Council. Both were impressed with the kids’ depth of knowledge and understanding
• Applied for – and received – Meridian Funding worth $4000 to get the major engineering works done
• Contacted local contractors and suppliers to get quotes for the project. Local business Pope and Grey were contracted to lift the concrete out of the stream and reshape it

The students have improved the stream to such an extent that they’re now ready to celebrate what is a very successful project and show the wider community what can be achieved when children take the lead to improve their environment.

The celebration will include a welcome by the school’s kapa haka group, followed by speeches and a planting session.

Where: Greytown School, East Street, Greytown
When: Friday 2 July, 1.30pm
