Get a tree to go at Bayfair Shopping Centre
When the word ‘takeaways’ is uttered, mouth watering images of burgers, sushi or chicken and chips may spring to mind. Bayfair Shopping Centre, however, is putting a completely new slant of this household phrase during the July school holidays the addition of a ‘Tree Takeaway’.
On weekdays from Monday 5 July to Friday 16 July, the popular Bay of Plenty Centre will run the ‘Tree Takeaway’ programme to show kids how they can do their bit for the environment, while being active in the outdoors.
Part of Bayfair’s holiday programme and the centre’s long-time commitment to the education and practice of sustainability, the Tree Takeaway station will be outside Farmers between 11am and 3pm and is free for kids to take part.
Bayfair Shopping Centre Manager Andrew Wadsworth says, “We want to invite children to come to Bayfair these school holidays, plant a native seedling in a biodegradable pot and take it home to replant in their own garden.
“Our aim is to give kids some useful tips about how to be sustainable and do good things for the environment, and a great start is to plant a native tree in their own backyard.”
The Tree Takeaway complements Bayfair’s continued support the Paper4Trees programme which is run by EERST and aims to help people in the community reduce their carbon footprint.
Bayfair’s sponsorship of the paper4trees programme goes towards supporting 213 schools in the Bay of Plenty region, by funding EERST’s visits to schools and ensuring they have sufficient resources to continue the project. At present, 1,689 schools and preschools across the country are involved in the paper4trees programme.
