FGC Members Phasing out use of Bisphenol A in Baby Bottles

Food & Grocery Council (FGC) members are voluntarily phasing out the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles over the coming months if they haven’t already done so and all companies have BPA-free options available, says Chief Executive, Katherine Rich.

“The voluntary phase out of the use of BPA in baby bottles during the last few years is in response to consumer preference and demand. This is not an issue about product safety.”

Mrs Rich says that FGC is guided by the evidence-based positions of Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) regarding the use of Bisphenol A in baby bottles. FGC continues to work closely with NZFSA on this issue.

“NZFSA’s view, based on current scientific evidence, is that there is no health concern associated with BPA. FSANZ has evaluated the safety of BPA and plasticisers in food, including that consumed by infants from baby bottles, and concluded that levels of BPA intake are very low and do not pose a risk to public health for any age group.”

“For those parents who prefer BPA-free product there is a wide range currently available.”
