In just a few hours New Zealand’s NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team sailors will be on the water for the start of competition racing at the 40th Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships. The regatta, on in Istanbul, Turkey has been declared open and the first races to count will get underway overnight tonight New Zealand time.

The kiwi team is made up of twelve sailors who will contest all eight events to be sailed at the regatta which has attracted 344 sailors from 63 nations around the globe. This annual event, which is often referred to as an Olympics for youth aged sailors, is the world’s premier youth classes regatta.

Racing is held across eight events, which use four classes of dinghy and one windsurfer. World champions will be identified for each event for both Boy's and Girl's. Along with the individual events, the prestigious Volvo Trophy, currently held by France, will be awarded to the top performing nation at the championship.

Daily reports focussing on the performance of the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team will be issued, while the programme, full results, images and more will be available in the first instance from the official regatta website.

About the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships

The ISAF Youth Worlds was first held in Sweden in 1971. The 2010 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey is the 40th championship. 344 sailors from 63 nations around the globe are entered.

Past notable winners include American’s Cup skippers, Chris Dickson (NZL), Russell Coutts (NZL), Dean Barker (NZL); Olympic medallists, Robert Scheidt (BRA), Amelie Lux (GER), Ben Ainslie (GBR), Nick Rogers (GBR) and Siren Sundby (NOR); Volvo Ocean Race sailors like Stuart Bannatyne (NZL) and Richard Clarke (CAN)
