Now is your chance to give local politics a go and have a say in the future of your city.


Nominations for candidates for elections within the Invercargill City District open on Friday, July 23.


Invercargill City Council Electoral Officer Graham Low said anyone wishing to stand as a candidate for the Invercargill City Council, Bluff Community Board the Invercargill Licensing Trust, Environment Southland or the Southland District Health Board had until Friday, August 20, to get their nominations in to him.


“The Mayor and Councillors take on a leadership role in Invercargill and represent the views of the community.


“We need a diverse range of people to represent our community therefore if you are interested in standing you can learn more from the elections portal www.elections2010.co.nz,” Mr Low said.



Mr Low said anyone over the age of 18 could stand for election as long as they were a New Zealand citizen and were enrolled on the electoral roll.


Voting papers will be sent out from September 17 and must be received by Mr Low no later than midday on Election Day, October 9.


Mr Low said nominations for candidates must be received by noon at either the Invercargill City Council, Civic Administration Building, 101 Esk Street, Invercargill or Bluff Service Centre, 94 Gore Street, Bluff.


Each candidate must be nominated on the nomination paper which is available from:

  • Invercargill City Council, Civic Administration Building, 101 Esk Street, Invercargill
  • Bluff Service Centre, 94 Gore Street, Bluff.



Nominations must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 (GST inclusive). He also advised that anyone wishing to vote should make sure that they were on the Invercargill Electoral Roll.

“You must be enrolled by August 20, to ensure that voting papers are sent to you. For those who are not enrolled you can fill out the enrolment forms at any New Zealand Post outlet.”
