Are You Eligible for a Rates Rebate?
From next week you can find out if you’re eligible for a rebate on your rates.
New Plymouth District Council has organised a dedicated team to work with customers on their rates rebates applications during August.
“People can phone to make an appointment to see a rates rebates team member at the Civic Centre, or can just pop into the Civic Centre or a library and service centre in Bell Block, Waitara or Inglewood and see the next available person,” says Manager Financial Services Phil Armstrong.
The maximum rebate available through the nationwide scheme is $570.
“This year we’re writing to everyone who has received a rates rebate in the past with information on how to apply for this year – about 93 per cent of last year’s recipients had received a rebate before,” he says.
“But we know there are people in the community who are eligible but have never applied.
“We want everyone who thinks it’s possible they’re eligible for a rebate to get in touch – they might end up pleasantly surprised.”
Anyone who owns their own home and has a household income of $22,340 or less will definitely get a rebate.
Homeowners on a higher income can be eligible depending on the level of rates and the number of dependents.
“It’s worth making an appointment with us and asking the question,” says Mr Armstrong.
A rebate can be applied for anytime during the 2010/11, but only during August will NDPC have a dedicated team to help the public work through their applications.
