Shoppers and retailers alike will be relieved to hear Council is installing a new toilet in King Street, at the west end of the CBD, in November.

Group Manager: Asset Management David Fraser says there has been strong demand from local retailers and shoppers for a public toilet at this end of town for some time.

“However, finding a vacant site for the toilet has proved difficult and as a result Council had looked to integrate the toilet into a new CBD carpark towards the west end of Heretaunga Street, in the future,” Mr Fraser says.

This is likely to happen following a review of long-term parking needs next year.

To quickly overcome the shortage of public toilet facilities in the meantime, Council has decided to install a new single toilet in the King Street public carpark, near Sutto Cafe.

“The toilet selected is a high-quality facility, which will provide a quality public convenience for shoppers and CBD visitors.

“The facility is designed to be able to be easily relocated so it can be picked up and re-sited at little cost when and if better opportunities present themselves,” Mr Fraser says.

Hastings resident Jean Pentelow, the “champion of Hastings public conveniences” says it’s great Council has been able to find a solution and she plans to be one of the first to test the “new loo”.

Hastings City Marketings’ President Sandra Hazlehurst says our members and the public will be delighted to have new toilet facilities in the west end of our city at last.

“With a number of new retail stores and cafes in Heretaunga Street West the new toilet facility will be a welcome addition to Hastings’ CBD,” Mrs Hazelhurst.
