Ordinary people who do extraordinary things
Calling good citizens, both young and old…nominations for the annual Far North District Council’s citizens’ awards open next week. (week beginning Monday September 10)
So if you know someone who has demonstrated outstanding courage or bravery, perhaps during the recent floods, or someone who has shown exceptional kindness toward others, or someone who has quietly given service to their communities, please let the council know.
The awards are an opportunity to celebrate the work that goes on behind the scenes, work that keeps communities healthy and contributes to the well being of our citizens.
“Think of neighbours who opened their homes to people left homeless after the floods, good Samaritans who make hospital visits and deliver meals on wheels, people who work voluntarily to raise funds to keep welfare organisations afloat, those who take in children in need of a loving home, and those who make a difference, just by being who they are,” said Far North Mayor Yvonne Sharp.
“We all know people who quietly get on with the business of helping others, often in a humble and self-effacing way, and we want to hear about them so we can acknowledge their efforts and thank them for the selfless service they give to their communities.”
Mayor Sharp said many community workers were elderly and had given a lifetime to helping others, while others were young people who were leading by example and assisting others from a very early age. “We want to hear about people of all ages,” she said.
The council will present 10 citizens’ awards this year. Nominations close on November 2 and nomination forms are available from council service centres, libraries and via the website www.fndc.govt.nz or by calling 0800 920 029.
