Thieves have stolen over 100 catchpit grates costing the city’s ratepayers thousands of dollars and endangering many people’s safety.

Transport manager Phil Consedine says there appears to be an organised group that has been targeting the theft of the catchpit grates. We have had a rash of reports of missing grates for the last couple of months.

“The cost of replacing the 50-60 kg cast iron grates is frustrating as that is ratepayers’ money that could have been invested in more productive projects. However, our biggest concern is for people’s safety, especially pedestrians, cyclists and children who might fall into an uncovered catchpit and be seriously hurt.

“We suspect, given the scale of stealing, that thieves must have a ‘market’ for the grates. While we have contacted the police and they are aware, we are appealing to residents to report any suspicious behaviour to the police or Council.”

Scrap metal merchants have been contacted as well as other local roading authorities and contractors.
