No wind, no racing at Cartagena

The sea breeze failed to take hold and racing was abandoned on the second day of the Audi MedCup Cartagena regatta.

For a while conditions had looked hopeful, and the fleet went to the race area. Then as the yachts assembled, the 6-7 knots of breeze fell away and never again looked like filling in and settling.

Crews waited in stiflingly hot temperatures until just before 4pm when the race committee sent the fleet back to port.

Tomorrow’s race schedule has been changed: the coastal race has been cancelled and three windward-leeward races will replace it - if the wind co-operates.

Weather forecasters appear to be confident that the sea breeze will return for Friday’s racing.

Principal race officer Maria Torrijo, reflecting on the day, said: “We were expecting more wind, especially between 1400 and 1600hrs.

“In fact when we docked out and reached the course, we had seven knots from the forecast direction, that's why we put the AP flag down. But by the time the fleet reached the course, the wind had completely died.”
