HazMobile in Franklin for free collection
Last year almost 300 local residents disposed of over 13,000kg of hazardous waste through the HazMobile service – now it’s your turn.
On Saturday the 6th of October Franklin District Council will be holding a free drop-off day for household hazardous waste from throughout the District. From 10am – 2pm local residents are welcome to bring their household hazardous waste to the Council office carpark (Manukau Road) where it can be safely disposed of.
“This is an opportunity to clear the house of difficult to get rid of hazardous materials. Removing these hazardous wastes from our homes makes for a healthy, safer community,” says Franklin District Council’s Solid Waste Manager, Nigel Birse.
Franklin District Council encourages people to go around the house before the drop-off day and see if they have anything to bring along, such as:
- Garden and pool chemicals
- Batteries
- Waste oil or other car products
- Gas bottles
- Glue, cleaners and poisons
“We are not able to accept asbestos, ammunition, explosives or medical waste,” says Nigel. Also remember that water based paints are not toxic so aren’t collected as hazardous waste. Resene will accept their own paints back at no charge, and other brands for only a small price, so that’s the perfect way to get rid of them. Alternatively you can mix the paint with sand to dry it out and then put it safely in the rubbish.
Although Council welcomes household and farm chemicals, the hazardous drop-off is not the place for commercial waste or large qualities of agrichemicals. If you have agrichemicals call the ARC Enviroline on 0800 80 60 40 and they’ll be able to organise to collect these from your property free of charge.
