An hour-long extravaganza will mark the start of Dunedin’s official one-year countdown to the kick-off of Rugby World Cup 2011.
From 12.30pm until 1.30pm on 9 September, in the Octagon, there will be a variety of activities for residents to watch and take part in.
These will include the Spin It Wide Corporate Team challenge, which will pit local businesses and organisations against each other to pass rugby balls in a race along the carriageway, while children will compete in the “Under-10 How Far Can You Throw” challenge.
Meanwhile, the Selwyn Ballet will perform a specially-commissioned work, entitled “Spin It Wide”. Local radio personalities will provide live commentary and broadcast proceedings.
Supported by the Dunedin City Council, Sport Otago, and the Otago Rugby Football Union, the extravaganza will be part of similar events being staged across the country as a year of rugby fever begins.
* Spin It Wide is the southern campaign to make the most of local opportunities surrounding Rugby World Cup 2010.
