Building inspectors from Tararua are lending a hand to assess residential earthquake damage in Canterbury.

Russell Palmer and Trevor Burlace flew to Christchurch on Thursday joining colleagues from around the country.

They will be working in the suburbs of Avonside, Bexley, Brooklyn and Halswell.

Councils received a call from the National Crisis Management Centre under the Beehive, which is coordinating responses to the Canterbury Region, seeking 60 building inspectors or building team leaders for immediate deployment to Christchurch.

The pair would be helping out for a week, council’s manager environmental services Mike Brown said.
Neighbouring authority Central Hawke’s Bay also answered the call, despatching Building Control team leader John Carter to assist.
