What: The Commission has released its June quarterly monitoring report containing key statistics about telecommunications markets in New Zealand and overseas. It is available on the Commission’s website: www.comcom.govt.nz, under Industry Regulation /Telecommunications/MonitoringandReporting.

Why: Recent amendments to the Telecommunications Act have empowered the Commerce Commission to monitor competition in telecommunications markets and their performance and development. This report is the Commission’s third quarterly report and builds on the previous two.

What’s new: For the first time the Commission has ranked the standard Telecom home telephone line plans and those of TelstraClear against the rest of the OECD using standard benchmarks.

What’s next: The Commission will publish an annual report with a more detailed analysis of the state of telecommunication markets in New Zealand later in the year. From time to time the Commission will also publish reports focusing on particular aspects of telecommunications markets.
