Buck Shelford announced as the new face – and body – of Jenny Craig

Jenny Craig has announced that Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford will join them as their new Ambassador with a commitment to shedding 20 kilos.

“Like a lot of guys my age, I know I’m carrying more weight than is healthy,” says Buck. “I’ve got 20 kilos to lose to get back to my fighting weight, which is where I want to be. I know I could lose about 10kg on my own, but there’s no way I can lose the other 10kg, so that’s why I’ve gone to Jenny Craig for help,” he continues.

At the same time as improving his own health, Buck is hoping to set an example for all New Zealanders, especially the Maori and Pacific Island Communities.

“It’s incredibly difficult to visit a marae and see my Iwi just kilos away from a heart attack, or diabetes killing them off one-by-one. Food is our culture, but there has to be a limit, and quite frankly, we just eat too much.

“I am concerned that New Zealanders as a nation aren’t making the right food choices, so I want set an example for them by taking responsibility for my own health by losing the weight and changing my eating habits before I get any bigger. Then I can show others how easy it is can be to live a longer, healthier and happier life!”

Managing Director of Jenny Craig New Zealand and Australia, Amy Smith, says that like many Kiwi men, Buck has allowed his weight to creep up on him.

“At a time when approximately 62% Kiwi adults are either overweight or obese, more people need to incorporate healthy eating and exercise into their lifestyles,” says Ms Smith.

“Obesity is a risk factor in this country’s number one killer, which is cardiovascular disease. That means we all need to take this incredibly seriously. We believe if anyone can inspire Kiwis to take those steps to look after themselves, its Buck.”

Buck says his Jenny Craig consultant Natalie will coach him through his journey and help him learn the life-long skills for a healthy diet and lifestyle. That plan will see him eat smaller portion sizes, but eat more regularly, and teach him to snack on healthy foods when he’s hungry.

“I think most of the food I eat is quite nutritious, but I just eat too much of it; and because I’m no longer doing as much training as I used to, the weight has crept up on me over the years.”

Buck says that while he had to make the decision to lose weight for himself, his whanau is a powerful motivation.
“I want to grow old with my wife and be around for my kids for as long as possible. I also want to be able to throw a rugby ball around with my future mokopuna!” he says.
